Crete Downtown Historic District

The Crete Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016 and is centered on the intersection of 13th Street and Main Avenue. Most of the properties within the district were built in the 1880s-1920s and reflect a variety of architectural styles and forms common to that time period. The district also includes the Crete Mills, which began in 1869 and is the oldest continually operating business in Crete. (Read more about the history of Crete.)

Revitalization

A concerted effort has been made in recent years to restore, preserve, and improve Crete’s downtown storefronts. This included multiple rounds of Downtown Revitalization Program funding for facade improvements from 2018-2020. The work continues with the development of a new Comprehensive Plan for the city which includes several goals and points of improvement for the downtown area.
